Artist Statement
Presently, my artwork is an examination of abstraction expressionism,
photo-realism or color field painting, exploring the technical infrastructure.
The development of the art can be a combination of a photographic image or
construction of innovative technical artistry, exploring the content of color.
The object of taking a 2 dimensional surface and translating that surface
to create a 3 dimensional illusion. By developing the problem art and finding
the solution the finished art product. The work and labor begins with the custom
canvas stretcher 3" or larger. The stretched canvas is sprayed with several
application of gesso, wet sanded, sprayed, wet sanded ect. until the canvas
presents the finish similar to hot press illustration board. I 'am self-taught
airbrush artist for 30 + yrs. The techniques I have developed in this time are
(1) using only one mask per painting, which I call "puzzle masking"(
developed from the years of stained glass). This technique eliminates the
excessive surface cutting, offering smoother professional looking finish. The
(2nd) technique called "bridge masking" to eliminate the hard edge
stiff effect so commonly seen, creating a softer airbrushed image. I also
freehand airbrush using (3rd) technique" pixel imaging", example the
"Series Species in Skies". The aspect of creating the technical and
mechanical surfaces sand, metal glass and chrome and along with the reflections
of objects and space and how they relate in the painting fascinates me, example
"Series The Endangered Species Antique Automotive Art". The art is
generated using photography as the source of information to develop the work of art. The
photography reference work is shot by myself using both a SLR and DSlR.
The photos provide the necessary information for painting and also the
opportunity for computer adjustment and printing reference copies. Also the
elimination of copyright infringement using some stock photo. The development of
my art can be intuitive or a mental image. The image is transferred to the
surface, canvas or board and developed until I'm mentally satisfied the with the
results. The art I explore is hard- edge, photo-realism, abstract expressionism
and color field combinations. After all is said and done, isn't art a
self-expression of an experiment of a thought process? The paintings are
developed using custom mixed acrylic paints. Artist of interest Frank Stella, Al
Held, Ad Reinhardt, J Albers, Piet Mondrian, Morris Louis, Don Eddy & The
Photo-Realist Group. Born in 1948 Chicago, Graduated Northeastern Illinois
University, Chicago 1973 ,Bachelor Art Education, (awarded full scholarship).
